(A New) Home for the Holidays.

It’s been ages since I’ve posted and I know Plum has been all but given up on, but I have a little minute and I’m feeling inspired to put into words my gratitude for the blessings of 2012.

I haven’t really shared this publicly (though it’s hardly a secret); my career has taken a direction I never planned for. Last fall I took a contract job as the designer for a habitability group working on the high-visibility spaces aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (a Nimitz class aircraft carrier currently in its mid-life nuclear overhaul).

The "office"

I’m designing the Executive Officer’s spaces, the Captain’s cabin and stateroom, the Admiral and Chief of Staff’s staterooms, cabins and offices, the Commander of the Airgroup (CAG) spaces, the chapel, theater and museum. I’m filled with pride and gratitude every time I think about this amazing opportunity.  Photography aboard the ship is prohibited but I will work with the Public Affiars Officer to get images of my spaces upon completion. I promise I’ll share!

Between November and March my contract turned into a full-time position with my firm and in April I left for a ten-day trip to install the Executive Officer’s spaces aboard the ship. My trip was extended twice, then I was asked how I felt about staying in Virginia indefinitely. Long story short, I moved to Virginia with two suitcases and a carry-on.

A very inefficient cross-country move ensued. I lived in a hotel for six weeks, then a little apartment for seven months. Finally on December first I moved to my current home. I’m only a few weeks in and there so much to do but I can share a few shots of my sunroom/office, living and dining rooms.

I’m so happy to have found this little jewel box. My neighborhood is darling, the neighbors are super-welcoming and lovely and the house itself has tons of potential. I’ll try to post as I make improvements and share some of the gorgeous architecture of my new, East Coast surroundings.

Until then… Happy, happy holidays and cheers to a bright and beautiful 2013, filled with opportunity and joy!

xx, M
